A fatal threat to someone whose safety I valued more than mine made me outgrow my privileged upbringing. Before that, I cared little for how to create safety, security in the home and neighborhood.

I lived in the exact same heavily guarded house in a gated community until the end of my bachelorhood. When Kate and I were married, we purchased a home closer to our jobs and immediately had a surveillance camera system installed.

By then, I had begun to take a little more interest in learning how to create safety, security in the home and neighborhood. I had our property outfitted with a wireless security alarm, entry and driveway alarms.

We were taking a stroll one cool evening when we came upon a man walking around, looking lost. We approached him, only to have a gun waved before our faces as he demanded money and jewelry.

Due to my initial efforts in researching on how to create safety, security in the home and neighborhood, we possessed a stun gun and personal safety alarm at the time. Still, I signaled at my spouse to cooperate although it would have been a 2:1 match.

Negotiating for release, I relinquished what money and jewelry we had. To my surprise, the attacker commanded that he be escorted beyond the quarter’s guards using my vehicle, seizing Kate to make his point.

Remembering what I had picked up on how to create safety, security in the home and neighborhood by then, I was convinced he was going to plunder our house and perhaps end our lives.

I extracted my stun gun with new-found strength unearthed by the possibility of my bride’s demise. We knocked the assaulter down, Kate pulling a pepper spray out unexpectedly. My outlook on safety has never been the same since.

When my parents no longer had children at home they re-upholstered their living room couches in white fabric. It was beautiful – they said it reminded them of heaven – but it practically screamed “No children live here.” Over the years the couches still retained the beauty, unfortunately they had also dimmed considerably, because even though they no longer had any children living with them, children still visited frequently.

In spite of new folklore accounts of the footlose and the childless lives of numerous retirees, the fact still remains that even though parents may have finished raising their own children, they soon become grandparents, which often means that their lives are not child free.

Grandparents Taking on the Role as Parents

Countless grandparents find themselves taking on the role as parents when parents are not capable to care for their own children. With the increased need for two incomes to take care of a family, many grandparents become childcare providers during the day as they babysit their grandchildren on a regular basis.

As a result, you will find many more childproofed grandparent homes than you have in previous generations as grandparents are forced to straddle the line between being a grandparent and acting in the role of a part time parent. Not only that, but grandparents are generally involved in discipling their grandchildren as well as countless other tasks related to parenthood.

Remember the Child When Planning for Safety

Perhaps the most important time that a grandparent needs to think like a parent is when planning for safety in the home. A home that has children in it for any length of time needs to be childproofed to some measure. Caustic chemicals and cleaning agents should not be stored in lower cabinets. Medicines should be placed out of sight, preferably in a cabinet that is locked.

It is important to lock Tazers in a gun cabinet, along with any additional weapons that children shouldn’t operate. Although Tazer guns are not thought of as a lethal device, make sure that children aren’t around them unsupervised. Serious injury can result in the mistreat of this device. Even if having children in the home is a rare occurrence, it only takes one terrible mishap to make it worth the trouble to lock away things that could be harmful to children.
